On Wednesday, July 29, the IntelliSense Drill from McGinley Orthopaedic Innovations LLC (MOI) was used for the first time in an operating room at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia, Pa.
"The IntelliSense Drill represents a quantum leap in drill and depth measurement,” said Scott Kozin, M.D., chief of staff for Shriners. “The IntelliSense Drill redefines the technique of depth sensing with unparalleled accuracy that will lessen radiation, minimize screw wastage, and improve patient safety."
Amer Samdani, M.D., chief of surgery at Shriners, added: "The IntelliSense Drill provides valuable information on pedicle screw length which decreases radiation exposure and improves operative efficiency ultimately improving patient safety."
This is the second milestone for the IntelliSense Drill in recent months.
"Having just received FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) clearance in February, seeing the IntelliSense Drill in the operating room is a huge step for us," said Joseph C. McGinley, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of MOI. "Improving patient safety is our highest priority and we are excited to get the drill into surgeons' hands for the first time."
The IntelliSense Drill is an orthopedic surgical drill that incorporates technological advances into the standard orthopedic drill including continuous hole depth measurement and auto-stop capabilities.
Casper, Wyo.-based MOI was founded in 2012 by McGinley, an engineer and physician with a background in medical device development, sports medicine and education.
