Emerging spinal device company Expanding Orthopedics Inc. (EOI) has appointed Hansen Yuan, M.D., to its board of directors.
“We are extremely proud and honored to add Dr. Yuan to our board of directors,” said Mike Sherman, director at EOI and partner at MB Venture Partners. “Dr. Yuan is a global key opinion leader in spine surgery with great engineering and technical skills. His extensive clinical and research experience will allow him to immediately add value to the company, both on product development and industry collaboration.”
Yuan is professor of orthopedic and neurological surgery at State University of New York, Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He has held numerous leadership positions in several spine societies. He is a president emeritus of the North American Spine Society, and current president of the Spine Arthroplasty Society. Yuan serves as editor in chief of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery online journal and is the author of numerous publications on spine pathologies and treatments. He has advised several market leaders in the spine industry and has been extensively involved in product development with these organizations and through his own innovative inventions and entrepreneurial efforts. He also has served in various industry positions including chief technology officer of Bonovo Orthopedics Inc.
“What attracts me to Expanding Orthopedics is its unique and broad intellectual property portfolio and their extensive product pipeline addressing real, unmet needs in the market and offering unique solutions for surgeons to provide great care to their patients,” said Yuan. “The company’s first product, the XPED Expanding Pedicle Screw System, addresses a crucial clinical need found in about 20 percent of patients undergoing spinal fusion today. Currently some of these patients receive none or sub-optimal treatments because of the lack of approved techniques and available device.”
“We are very pleased with the current results of our European release of the XPED Expanding Pedicle Screw System,” said Ofer Bokobza, CEO of the company. “EOI is the in the midst of several exciting challenges, including the launch of two innovative products into the international market in 2013: A minimally invasive [minimally invasive surgery (MIS)] XPED system with enhanced fixation features as well as a new MIS cage based on an innovative guided 3-D expansion technology or maximum stability and ease of use. We are very excited to have Dr. Yuan joining EOI board and are confident he will contribute immediately to our product development pipeline as well as our United States and China penetration strategy.”
