The first Navio-assisted surgery has been performed in Australia. The Navio surgical system, made by Minneapolis, Minn.-based Blue Belt Technologies Inc., is a CT-free, robotic-assisted technology used for implant placement for partial knee replacement. The procedure was an implantation of a GRU knee system from the company’s corporate partner Global Orthopaedics Technology
“Handheld robotics are an important and exciting step on the path to improved precision and reliability in joint replacement,” said Bill Walter, Ph.D. (surgery), Orthopedic Surgeon at Mater Hospital in Sydney, Australia, who performed the procedure. “In a time where implant design and materials have achieved great success, accurate surgery is the last realm where significant improvement is possible. Until now surgery has been largely an art. Technologies like this are turning surgery into less of an art and more of a science.”
Blue Belt Technology’s partnership with Global Orthopaedics increases the Navio system’s reach outside the United States and brings the first robotic-assisted solution for partial knee replacement to Australia.
“Our partnership with Global Orthopaedics and the first Navio-assisted partial knee replacement performed in Australia set an excellent foundation for our commercial efforts outside the United States,” said Eric Timko, president and CEO of Blue Belt Technologies.
