The AAOS Council on Education provides oversight and decision-making for the Academy’s education portfolio, which is developed in accordance with essential policies and standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
Tornetta is chairman and professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Boston University School of Medicine. He also serves as chief in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and director of orthopedic trauma at Boston Medical Center. Tornetta’s research interests focus on both the clinical and technical aspects of orthopaedic trauma surgery and the injured patient. Currently his studies involve elderly patients’ injury patterns, fracture healing and minimally invasive surgery.
He earned his medical degree and completed his internship and orthopaedic residency training at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. Following a fellowship at Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles, Calif., he was appointed the director of orthopaedic trauma at Kings County Hospital Center and the University Hospital of Brooklyn (New York).
Tornetta has held numerous leadership roles with Academy councils and committees during his 20 years of volunteering for the organization, including as a member-at-large of the AAOS Board of Directors.
A former president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), he served as chairman of the OTA Strategic Planning and Board Development Committee. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and is an editor and reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Journal of Trauma.
Tornetta is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, symposia and book chapters, and is a three-time recipient of the Robert E. Leach Resident Teaching Award.
