Orthofix today launched Opus BA, a synthetic bioactive bone graft for cervical and lumbar spinal fusion. It’s used to fill skeletal system bone voids or gaps not intrinsic to bony structure’s stability.
Available in putty or strips, Opus BA acts as a scaffold to allow bone growth across the surface that’s reabsorbed and replaced with natural bone during healing. It’s hydrated with autogenous bone marrow or autograft with saline, making it moldable and useful for versatile applications.
“Bioactive synthetics are a very large and growing market,” Orthofix Global Spine president Kevin Kenny told the press. “We recognize that each bone substitute has its own unique advantages and surgeons have different preferences when evaluating the use of autologous, allogeneic or synthetic bone graft materials for their patients. The addition of Opus BA is another example of our commitment to providing surgeons with a wide range of solutions so they can select the best bone substitute for each patient.”
Opus BA’s osteoconductive matrix is made of carbonate apatite bone mineral, bioactive glass, and Type 1 Collagen carrier. Orthofix’s process ensures the osteconductive matrix has uniform distribution to mimic cancellous bone’s structure and porosity.
