The usual favorites—M&A, partnerships, FDA approvals—captivated ODT website visitors this week, but some off-beat news garnered some attention as well.
ARCH Medical Solutions' acquisition of Alpha Manufacturing & Design was the top favorite, followed by Tecomet's partnership with Precision ADM.
The Arch Medica-Alpha pairing further solidifies ARCH’s position as a diversified supplier in the medical device contract manufacturing market. Warsaw, Ind.-based Alpha, founded in 2008, manufactures surgical instruments and assemblies; surgical drill bits and reamers; surgical blades; spinal, trauma, and dental implants; and more.
Tecomet's strategic partnership with Canadian contract manufacturer Precision ADM aims to expand development and production opportunities within additive and subtractive manufacturing. The collaboration will focus on additive manufacturing in the medical device, orthopedic implant, aerospace, and defense markets. The two companies will jointly leverage resources and expertise to compress timelines.Tecomet will be able to offer new process expertise in IE plastics, nickel alloys, aluminum, cobalt chrome, and 316 SS, while expanding capacity in titanium and 17-4 stainless steel. It will also extend Precision ADM’s Advanced Digital Manufacturing (ADM) proprietary set of processes, which has produced millions of additive manufactured implants and instruments in the medical market.
Tyber Medical scored page views by earning FDA 510(k) clearance for its new NiTy+ One-Shot staple fixation system, the first bone-fixation instrument of its kind with a uniquely designed, single-pass insertion instrument. However, Stryker drove more traffic by unveiling its “OR of the Future”—a model operating room in the company’s Flower Mound facility. The model OR provides an interactive experience to conceptualize new OR design and technology. It is designed an integrated to help boost protection against infection and increase cleanability, all while using intelligent tech and time-efficiency components.
Alisina Shahi, M.D., Ph.D., enticed cybervisitors too, but in a rather unusual way: He earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Shahi—from Cooper University Health Care in Camden, N.J.—assembled all 30 bones of the human leg in 78 seconds, beating out 112 other challengers. The assembly occurred at the recent American Association for Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) 2022 Annual Meeting. The record was sponsored by OrthAlign Inc., a California-based medical device and technology company, which set up a booth at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas, at AAHKS on Nov. 4 and 5. The company donated $25 per attempt to Operation Walk, an all-volunteer medical humanitarian organization that provides joint replacement surgeries at no cost for those in need in the U.S. and around the world.
