Amendia Inc., a Marietta, Ga.-based orthopedic device manufacturer, is expanding its spine device manufacturing facility by almost double. The 48,848-square-foot facility in Marietta will grow to 90,000 square feet to keep up with demand.
The company moved from its original 20,000-square-foot facility to its current location in 2011. Over the last few years, the firm has continued to grow through development of new devices and demand for its existing product line.
Amendia collaborates with surgeons to develop, manufacture and market minimally invasive spine and orthopedic implants and instruments. The company focuses on spinal implant products, such as cervical plates and lumbar screws, with more than 18 products currently on the market.
“Our company has been very fortunate to experience exponential growth since our inception,” said Tim Lusby, president and founder of Amendia. “While this is a great problem to have, especially in this economy, it has created the need for expansion space every few years. While we looked at other options this time, the infrastructure in our current location adequately supports our manufacturing needs, so we decided to lease all the remaining space in the building.”
Amendia also recently announced an investment of up to $50 million to commercialize a biomedical spinoff, Vivex Biomedical Inc., that focuses on implant technology to help stimulate bone regrowth. Vivex has also licensed a highly adaptive adult stem cell line, known as MIAMI (Marrow Isolated Adult Multi-lineage Inducible) cells.
“The stem cells [harvested from bone marrow] offer a broad competence in tissue regeneration, with potential to support bone, organ, and even nerve repair,” Vivex CEO Tracy Anderson told the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
