K2M Adds to Biologics Portfolio

New technology offers foam and granulous bone grafts.

Leesburg, Va.-based K2M Inc., a spine device company focused on complex spinal pathologies and minimally invasive procedures, has expanded its U.S. biologics offering with the launch of the Venado foam strips and Venado granules bone graft systems.

Venado represents an entirely new product family in K2M’s growing biologics portfolio, the rest of which is made up of the Vikos allograft systems and Vesuvius osteobiologic systems. The systems are available in a variety of configurations and sizes designed to enhance bone regeneration and act as an osteogenic stimulus after spine surgery. Venado foam strips are purified fibrillar collagen (the main component in connective tissue) and biphasic granules (calcium phosphate, which makes up 70 percent of bone). The foam strips are designed to hydrate quickly in blood or saline and become flexible and moldable, yet less likely to dissociate or break apart, according to the company. When bone cells migrate into the graft composite, the implant functions as a scaffold for osteogenic components. Venado granules are a biphasic combination of hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate designed to provide excellent resorption characteristics.

According to Faheem Sandhu, M.D., neurosurgeon and associate professor at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., “Venado provides for synthetic bone graft alternatives for hospitals and surgeons interested in a non-allograft solution to the management of complex spinal surgical issues, and these unique products complement and enhance K2M’s already comprehensive and innovative spine portfolio.”

“We are excited to bring to market the Venado Bone Graft Systems and to expand on our company’s presence in the rapidly growing biologics sector,” said Eric Major, K2M’s president and CEO. “The launch of Venado enables us to meet a significant demand for the high quality products surgeons have come to expect from K2M.”
