Technology originally was developed for monitoring astronaut activity.
Seattle, Wash.-based JointMetrix Medical LLC has developed a new remote monitoring technology for use in joint replacement surgery. The company presented an abstract describing the system’s use during the Orthopaedic Research Society’s annual meeting in late January. The system is a collaboration between JointMetrix and the University of Washington’s Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, and is being primed for release later this year. JointMetrix Medical was created to commercialize technology developed by Peter Cavanagh, Ph.D., D.Sc., former chairman of Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland Clinic and current vice chairman of research in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington. Cavanagh has been developing this remote monitoring technology over the last decade in connection with NASA-sponsored research to measure astronauts’ activity aboard the international space station. Specialized for orthopedics, the technology allows continuous and accurate measurement of patients’ joint motion and overall activity, which hopefully will greatly enhance clinicians’ ability to track and positively influence post-surgical outcomes. “Remote monitoring will be an important element of care in orthopedics, allowing clinicians to more appropriately select and care for their patients,” said Dave Marver, CEO of JointMetrix Medical. “The data our system provides will allow earlier and more effective intervention while providing much needed efficiencies for busy surgeons and their staffs.”
