Wright Medical to Release Updated Bone Plating System

The system will be used in ankle and foot applications.

Orthopedic device company Wright Medical Group has released the next generation of the Ortholoc 3Di Reconstruction Plating System for ankle and foot operations. It will be a global release, with the system available in the United States by the end of July and in certain regions outside the United States from the company’s distributorship.

The plating system was granted 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November 2010.

“The new Ortholoc 3Di Reconstruction System offers surgeons a wide range of plate designs to address some of the most common procedures performed by foot and ankle surgeons, including bunion reconstruction and fusions of the first toe,” said Carroll P. Jones, M.D., an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon with OrthoCarolina Foot and Ankle Institute in Charlotte, N.C. “The system’s versatility allows surgeons to choose the best screw sizing and placement to create a robust implant construct, which is crucial for proper bone healing.”

The system consists of a range of anatomical plates, screws and specialized surgical instrumentation used for fracture fixation, osteotomies, and fusions of the foot. This new version includes Wright’s Ortholoc 3Di polyaxial locking technology, designed to help the surgeon adjust the screw trajectory to meet the anatomic requirements of the patient while providing a strong locking construct to promote bone fixation.

“Along with other planned new product launches, the Ortholoc 3Di Plating System is a core foundational portion of our foot and ankle product portfolio and will be key to exiting the year at well above market rates of growth for our foot and ankle business,” said Robert Palmisano, president and CEO of Wright Medical. “We expect to expand this system in the future to treat other areas of the foot, including complex midfoot and hindfoot procedures.”
