Organizers expect even more international visitors.
May 29, 2015
By: Chris Delporte
Starting this year, the sprawling Medica and Compamed trade shows held annually in Dusseldorf, Germany, will be held concurrently on new show days: from Monday to Thursday (instead of Wednesday to Saturday for Medica and Wednesday to Friday for Compamed). This year’s dates are Nov. 16-19. “This significant change is the result of the intensive evaluation of exhibitor and visitor surveys as well as coordination with industry associations. Focusing on the “normal” working days of the week—instead of Wednesday to Saturday as in the past—will make a more even visitor flow in the exhibition halls on all days possible, enabling exhibitor presentations as well as their stand infrastructure to be utilized in a more consistent manner,” explained Joachim Schäfer, managing director of Messe Düsseldorf, show organizers for Medica and Compamed. Show planners expect 4,800 exhibitors from more than 60 nations to participate in Medica 2015, displaying new products, services and processes for inpatient and outpatient care. A “noticeable increase” in exhibit space bookings has been recorded from the United States, China, the Netherlands, France, Spain and South Korea as well as Turkey and Saudi Arabia, organizers said. Medica 2015 will focus on: electromedicine/medical technology (more than 2,500 exhibitors); laboratory technology/diagnostics; physiotherapy/orthopedic technology; commodities and consumables; information and communication technology; medical furniture and specialist furnishings as well as building technology for hospitals and physicians’ offices. Of the almost 130,000 visitors at Medica 2014, more than 50 percent came from countries other than Germany (from a total of around 120 nations). In recent years, in order to meet the needs of the international attendees, the program of accompanying conferences and forums integrated into the trade show have been restructured and aligned at a more international level with many events held in English. Once again this year, the Medica Education Conference, which took place last year for the first time and was organized by the German Society for Internal Medicine (DGIM), will offer four main subject areas, broken down by day. Key topics at this year’s conference will include: Surgery and new operational techniques (Nov. 16); imaging, endoscopy and interventions (Nov. 17); geriatrics, nutritional medicine and palliative care (Nov. 18); as well as infection control and laboratory medicine (Nov. 19). Medica, as in years past, will again hold a conference for disaster planning and military medicine, in addition to conference topics for sports medicine. Both will be geared toward an international audience, with lectures held in English, organizers said. For high-level military representatives, Medica exhibitors will offer an abundance of solutions for very special issues – ranging from equipment for emergency treatment, telemedicine applications for the secure transfer of data between vehicles and military hospitals to a complete array of surgery equipment and customized turnkey building modules. In addition to the Medica conference program, there will be numerous forums integrated directly into the trade show, including the Medica IT Forum, the Connected Healthcare Forum (both in hall 15) and the Medica Tech Forum (medical technology industry innovations and political, economic and legal framework conditions for the field of high-tech medicine, in hall 12). The Compamed portion of the event focuses on the suppliers to the medical technology industry but also from its suppliers. More than 700 exhibitors (in halls 8a and 8b) will offer technological solutions and services, including new materials, components, primary products, packaging and services to complete custom manufacturing.
