The staple was found to be a good modality for skin closure in knee arthroplasty.
The Internet Journal of Orthopedic Surgery has published a study titled “Knee Arthroplasty Wound Closure with Absorbable Subcuticular Staples: A Review of 104 Consecutive Procedures,” which concluded that “Absorbable subcuticular staples are a safe, secure, efficient, and effective modality for skin closure in knee arthroplasty. Compared to our experience with suture and metal staples, the key advantages of absorbable staples are time savings in surgery and the clinic, uncomplicated cosmetic healing, and improved patient satisfaction,” the authors continued. Plymouth, Mass.-based Incisive Surgical Inc. reported that its Insorb absorbable skin stapling technology was used in the study as the skin closure device. This new technology places an absorbable staple entirely underneath the skin to close surgical incisions. “The results of this peer-review clinical study are profound,” said John L. Shannon, Jr., president and CEO of Incisive Surgical. “The Insorb staple does not pierce and puncture the outside of the patient’s skin like metal skin staples, and this study suggests that the Insorb skin closure technology may lead to higher patient satisfaction with reduced costs. This is yet another clinical study that cited that the use of Insorb staples resulted in reduced inflammation and erythema.” The Insorb absorbable skin stapler offers the speed of metal skin staplers with the cosmetic results and comfort of absorbable sutures. The Insorb stapler uses bioabsorbable staples that are placed underneath the skin and dissolve in the body within months. The staples, which are comprised of the same material as the leading bioabsorbable sutures, break down naturally, thereby reportedly eliminating the anxiety, pain, cost and inconvenience of post-operative staple removal.
