New leader is chief of women’s sports medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Boston orthopedic surgeon Elizabeth Matzkin, M.D., FAAOS, has been named chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) Membership Council. The newly created Membership Council serves to identify, anticipate and articulate members needs and provide oversight and support for a personalized and seamless member experience. The Council is made up of eight committee members who will also support improvements in the acquisition, engagement, and retention of members. “It’s energizing to have representatives from the diverse AAOS membership come together with one mission at heart,” said Dr. Matzkin. “I look forward to seeing what we can achieve alongside the AAOS’ Board of Directors to provide the orthopedic profession with the tools needed to deliver the highest quality musculoskeletal care to our patients.” Dr. Matzkin is chief of women’s sports medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. She specializes in providing care and the prevention of sports injuries, including minimally invasive arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery, cartilage and ligament repair, and joint preservation. She also currently serves as a team physician for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and is the head team physician of Stonehill College. Dr. Matzkin received her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. She received her master’s degree in applied physiology from The Chicago Medical School and attended medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Dr. Matzkin completed her internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic shoulder and sports medicine at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Dr. Matzkin is a former team physician for Duke University men’s football team and the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the U.S. Paralympics Soccer Team and the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team. Dr. Matzkin has been actively involved with the AAOS for more than 12 years and just finished serving as a member-at-large on the Board of Directors. She previously served as chair of the Women’s Health Advisory Board on the Communications Cabinet and the Guidelines Work Group for the Non-Surgical Treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Knee. Dr. Matzkin participated in the Leadership Fellows Program as both a mentor and a fellow (Class of ’12 and ’17) respectively and held other numerous volunteer leadership positions within the Academy.
