Increasing R&D in bioinductive implants is expected to boost growth of the sector.
February 6, 2020
By: Businesswire
Arthroscopy, also known as arthroscopic or keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure on a joint. An arthroscope, a device with a camera is inserted into the joint through a small incision in arthroscopy. The global arthroscopy procedures and products market was estimated to account for $5.661 billion in value by the end of 2019. Increasing R&D in bioinductive implants is expected to boost growth of the global arthroscopy procedures and products market. For instance, in November 2019, Smith+Nephew announced that a clinical study demonstrated positive outcome in treatment of large and massive rotator cuff tears using its REGENETEN Bioinductive Implant. The implant is delivered arthroscopically through a small incision over the location of the rotator cuff tendon injury. Increasing geriatric population is also expected to boost growth of the market over the forecast period. Aging contributes to soft tissue degeneration and related-disorders, which increases demand for arthroscopy procedures. According to the World Health Organization, the share of geriatric population is expected to increase from 12 percent to 22 percent between 2015 and 2050. Key players in the market can focus on introducing new techniques that use arthroscopy procedures and products. For instance, in August 2019, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center developed two novel techniques for patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and cartilage loss in joints. One of those techniques, FlashFix uses arthroscopic repair/reconstruction combined with a collagen-platelet-rich-plasma composite to promote healing. Increasing prevalence of articular cartilage defects (ACD) in the patellofemoral (PF) region of the knee joint is also expected to boost growth of the market. For instance, in April 2018, a study, “The Patello-Femoral Joint Degeneration and the Shape of the Patella in the Population Needing an Arthroscopic Procedure,” found that the patients with the Wiberg type III patella shape had a higher incidence and larger size of ACD in the PF of the knee compared to the groups of Wiberg type I and II. Arthroscopy may lead to tissue or nerve damage and the placement and movement of the instruments within the joint can damage the joint’s structures. These factors are expected to hinder growth of the global arthroscopy procedures and products market. The Arthroscopic Implants segment in the global arthroscopy procedures and products market was valued at $3.48 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach $5.85 billion by 2027 at a CAGR of 5.7 percent during the forecast period. The growth of the segment is attributed to increasing patient population and increasing research and development. Increasing R&D to reduce the degree of fluid extravasation in knee arthroscopy is expected to boost growth of the market. Arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder joint is widely used instead of open surgery. However, it can be life-threatening due to complication of fluid extravasation into the surrounding tissues. However, a study in May 2018 by researchers from McMaster University Fluid found that fluid extravasation is most commonly managed nonoperatively and symptoms typically resolve with no evidence of long-term complications. Increasing clinical trials to assess the safety of hyperosmolar saline irrigation fluid in arthroscopic knee surgery is also expected to offer lucrative growth opportunities for market players. Arthrex Inc., CONMED Corporation, Johnson & Johnson, KARL STORZ GmbH & Co. KG, Olympus Corporation, Richard Wolf GmbH, and Stryker Corporation are some of the major players competing in the arthroscopy procedures and products market. Key players in the market are focused on conducting clinical trials related to arthroscopy. For instance, in December 2018, Arthrex assessed whether patients with rotator cuff tear arthropathy benefit from the Univers Revers shoulder prosthesis in terms of low complication risk, as well as high function and quality of life. Mayo Clinic is conducting a randomized controlled trial comparing inter-portal hip capsular repair vs. no repair following hip arthroscopy. The study is expected to be complete in December 2023.
