Rosies Base LLC has appointed Paul Birkmeyer, MEM, as commercial advisor.

An executive and leader at surgical and interventional companies for more than 30 years, Birkmeyer led the development and launch of the first minimally invasive surgery products for J&J’s DePuy Spine division. As president of Ouroboros Medical Inc., which makes minimally invasive products for degenerative spine conditions, he engineered a turnaround that culminated in a successful 2016 exit, with Johnson & Johnson and Accelus acquiring two new product lines developed under his leadership. Most recently, Birkmeyer was CEO of Belgian medical technology startup Trod Medical NV, which he led to a successful asset sale exit in 2022. He now leads the commercialization efforts for Rosies Base’s first two products, nanoSUS and nanoTi.

“Paul’s extensive track record and deep expertise will be an invaluable asset as we continue to commercialize our one-of-a-kind nano-structured medical alloys,” Rosies Base CEO Takafumi Komatsu, Ph.D., said “In addition to our nanoSUS and nanoTi alloys, we are developing a nano-structured chromium-cobalt product, as well as exploring the fabrication of medical device components using our alloys.”

Rosies Base’s proprietary metallurgical rolling process that delivers ultra-fine-grained metal alloys that are stronger and more fatigue-resistant than their “mother materials,” with anti-microbial properties that resist the formation of biofilms on implanted devices.

“The nano-structured alloys developed by Komatsu and the team at Rosies Base represent a new level of precision manufacturing and micro-fabrication for the medical technology industry,” Birkmeyer stated. “I’m excited to help them bring this innovation to market and into the hands of clinicians to help improve patient outcomes.”

Headquartered in Natick, Mass., Rosies Base is a start-up R&D company developing bio-compatible, durable, and cost-effective nano-structured alloys ideal for use in cutting-edge medical devices. Building on seven decades of precision manufacturing expertise serving the automobile and watch industries, Rosies Base is pioneering innovative manufacturing technology that enables highly accurate and precise microfabrication. The company’s first product, nanoSUS, is a nano-structured stainless steel designed to offer higher strength than conventional surgical-grade stainless steel, with improved processing capabilities and novel biological properties.
