LimaCorporate, HSS’s 3D-Printed, Patient-Specific Implants Used in First Surgeries

LimaCorporate’s patient-specific implants designed and made at ProMade PoC—the ProMade Point of Care Center for Complex Orthopedic Solutions at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS)—were successfully used in two complex joint reconstruction surgeries this week.
 
One was a hip surgery performed at HSS in New York City, the other a shoulder procedure at the OrthoCarolina Center in Charlotte, N.C.

The ProMade PoC Center helps grow collaboration between design and manufacturing engineers and surgeons to build patient-specific technologies before they’re 3D printed at the onsite facility. The process shortens the time to surgery by weeks.
 
The center was created through a long-standing LimaCorporate and HSS deal. The FDA-regulated commercial facility is located at the HSS in New York City.

Dr. Robert Buly, the hip and knee surgeon who performed the hip procedure, added, “3D printing has advantages over conventional machining particularly for the ease with which very complex shapes can be made.
