Arthrosurface Expands Shoulder Product Line

Company now offers focal and total resurfacing solutions.

Arthrosurface Inc. has performed its first total shoulder resurfacing procedure using the new HemiCAP(GRS) glenoid system and its existing HemiCAP shoulder. The system allows the company to offer a variety of solutions with its shoulder and product line—from focal to total resurfacing—and is the first to be implanted using an angled approach that leaves the head in place. The implant is designed as an inlay to match the surrounding anatomy, according to the company.

Preparation of the Arthrosurface inlay glenoid leaves the labrum intact and is implanted using an angled surgical approach instead of the more difficult and invasive straight-on technique.

According to the Franklin, Mass.-based firm, the HemiCAP system resulted from eight years’ worth of observations of working physicans and the identification of such recurring issues as easier access to the glenoid; avoidance of joint overstuffing (fitting implants more flush to the surface); and better availability of inlays (to improve stability of the glenoid).

“Our goal when designing the new HemiCAP(GRS) glenoid was to address these issues and, at the same time, allow surgeons to perform a total resurfacing without removing the head,” said Steve Ek, Arthrosurface co-founder and designer. “The angled instruments have also added a significant level of convenience to performing a total shoulder.”
