Orthopedic device maker FLA Orthopedics in Miramar, Fla., will lay off 163 employees and move its manufacturing operations to Mexico, according to a notice filed with the state of Florida.

The layoffs will be completed in four phases, beginning May 29, and the plant is expected to close by Sept. 30.

The company, which is owned by BSN Medical of Germany, also will consolidate its Huntersville, N.C., operations into those at Rutherford College, which is also in Huntersville, to cut costs. The Huntersville facility has 30 employees. An unspecified number of those employees will have jobs at the college, and the rest will be offered severance packages.

FLA Orthopedics designs and manufactures orthopedic, sports medicine and spinal bracing products.

A company spokesman could not be reached for comment.
