Medline Buys Spinal Fusion Technology from Amendia

Purchase adds to Medline's O.R. offering of spine instruments.

Medline Industries Inc. has inked a deal for the anterior cervical fusion distraction pin business from Marietta, Ga.-based spinal company AmendiaInc.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The United States has the hightest rates of spine surgery in the world, and Medline is banking on industry data that seems to indicate that the spinal fusion surgical market is expected to grow more than 8 percent a year.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) s a procedure to remove a herniated or degenerative disk in the neck area of the spine. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the most common reason for a herniated disk is related to the natural aging of the spine, but also can occur in people that use improper lifting techniques, are overweight, perform repetitive activities that strain the spine, frequent driving or have a sedentary lifestyle.

With the addition of the distraction pin, Medline claims it has a full line of surgical instruments for ACDF procedures, including retraction and distraction instruments and surgical procedure packs.

“We are expanding our product portfolio to meet all of our customers’ needs across the continuum of care,” said Rob Lockwood, president of Medline’s operating room division. “Now that we will be offering our own distraction pins, surgical instruments and other necessary medical and surgical supplies, we have everything a facility needs to help provide the best care and patient outcomes.”

Medline’s agreement with Amendia includes acquiring the design and regulatory pathway for the company’s anterior cervical fusion distraction pin.

Headquartered in Mundelein, Ill., Medline manufactures and distributes products for hospitals, extended care facilities, surgery centers, physician offices, home care agencies and providers, and retailers.
