Medical World Americas (MWA), an inaugural healthcare event being held in Houston, Texas, later this month, has added two big-name medtech firms to its list of sponsors. Minneapolis, Minn.-based Medtronic Inc. and Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Stryker Corp., have have signed on to MWA as premier sponsors of the inaugural event taking place April 28-30 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. According to show organizers: “The backing of these major players is another indication of the impetus this event is gaining within the global medical industry.” “One of Medtronic’s strategic initiatives is to focus on providing value based solutions across the care continuum. Partnering with Medical World Americas as a premier sponsor gives Cardiocom, a Medtronic company, the ability to educate the global healthcare community on how we can provide innovative solutions and integrated care coordination from the hospital to the home,” said Mike Genau, president and senior vice president, U.S. Region, for Medtronic. “With Medtronic’s collaboration with the Texas Medical Center’s world-class cardiovascular institutions, we believe Medical World Americas is an ideal platform to increase awareness and reach a broad and influential attendees base. Cardiocom, which Medtronic purchased in August last year for $200 million in cash, develops telehealth solutions. The company’s home telemonitoring equipment and telehealth services are designed to enable health professionals to identify symptomatic patients and intervene early to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations. Cardiocom addresses heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Stryker, which makes orthopedic implants, medical and surgical instruments, neurotechnolgy devices and spine products, will showcase its technologies on the exposition floor alongside other industry leaders. Nate Moreau, director of marketing for Stryker’s ProCare division said: “Stryker hopes to both inform the broader healthcare landscape about new technologies available in the marketplace and learn from partners like Medical World Americas as we collaborate to improve both quality and delivery in healthcare.” Stryker ProCare is responsible for the trouble-shooting and maintenance of the company’s products in the field. To date, MWA has a registered attendees from more than 31 U.S. States and 30 countries. A three-day roster of conference sessions covering topics in five key areas— cardiology, oncology, hospital disaster preparedness, healthcare-associated infections, and hospital occupational health and safety—are available for attendees, which comprise a mix of clinicians, medtech executives and other healthcare industry professionals. Medical World Americas combines a conference program with an expo showcasing the latest medical devices and cutting-edge products. Modeled after Medica, the world’s largest medical tradeshow, MWA is backed by a partnership between Houston’s Texas Medical Center and Messe Düsseldorf, the global medical event organizer that produces Medica. The educational tracks and session topics are arranged around Texas Medical Center’s areas of expertise to provide a wide range of specialized educational opportunities for healthcare professionals, particularly hospital administration and executives, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, research technicians, scientists, educators, procurement specialists and emergency responders. Another orthopedic big-hitter, Biomet Inc., is a supporting company. Global medtech company Covidien plc is exhibiting.
