AAOS 2025: Smith+Nephew Showcases Latest Tech for Robotics, Knees, Hips, and Shoulders

Smith+Nephew is featuring its latest advancements in orthopedic reconstruction at this year’s American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting.

Following are the technologies the company is highlighting at the event in San Diego.

Robotics

The company’s Coriograph pre-op planning and modeling services and Cori surgical system’s image-agnostic solution for robotic-assisted knee and computer-guided hip replacements offer a highly personalized approach. Coriograph’s recent addition of hip procedure support expands the platform’s reach to offer planning and simulation technology for total hip arthroplasty (THA).

The technology is able to simulate a patient’s functional activities of daily living (ADLs) specific to their anatomy.

The Cori digital tensioner provides objective gap data for procedure planning and execution. It’s now available for partial, total, and revision knee arthroplasty, delivering gap balance measurements to optimize surgical plans to each patient’s soft tissue anatomy.

Hips

The new Catalystem primary hip system addresses the increased adoption of anterior approach procedures. It features a triple-taper stem design with uniform proximal loading. According to Smith+Nephew, its reduced distal stem geometry and shorter lengths are ideal for an anterior approach and suitable for all approaches.

The company’s THA portfolio was recently recognized in the latest annual report from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry. It highlighted the performance of proprietary Oxinium (Oxidized Zirconium) on highly cross-linked polyethylene where the data showed the combination has the highest survivorship rate (>94.1%) among all bearing combinations over a 20-year period for THA.

Knees

The recently launched Oxinium implant tech on the Legion hinged knee (HK) system delivers the durability of metals, wear resistance of ceramics, and corrosion resistance better than both metal and ceramic, according to Smith+Nephew.

Legion HK was designed to offer a natural range of motion with medial pivot, lateral roll back, and screw home.

Aetos shoulder system

Smith+Nephew recently won U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for a stemless anatomic shoulder for the Aetos shoulder system. It addresses the rising demand for anatomic total shoulder replacement with a small operating room footprint.

It’s also engineered to maximize metaphyseal fixation and stability with an inlay collar, cruciate fins, and a porous titanium coating to promote biological fixation.
