Organization names first and second vice presidents in presidential line of succession.
Though Dr. Joseph Bosco has been at the job for less than 24 hours, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) has already found his successor(s). The organization today named Georgia orthopedic surgeon Daniel K. Guy, M.D., FAAOS, as first vice president of the Academy Board of Directors and New Orleans surgeon Felix H. “Buddy” Savoie III, M.D., FAAOS, as second vice president. Guy’s new role is the second in a four-year term of volunteer service that includes his serving as president of the Academy in 2021-22; Savoie will lead AAOS in 2022-23. “I am honored and privileged to be the first vice president of an organization that is dedicated to advancing the musculoskeletal health of our nation,” said Dr. Guy. “Along with our new president, Dr. Joseph Bosco, I look forward to supporting the Academy as it forges ahead with its five-year strategic plan. We understand that our membership is as diverse as the patients we serve and together we can create a bright future for orthopedic surgeons through advocacy, new innovations and education.” Dr. Guy specializes in hip and shoulder surgery, and sports medicine. He is in private practice at Emory Southern Orthopaedics in La Grange, Ga., and is on staff at WellStar/West Georgia Health System. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Murray State University in Murray, Ky., and both a master of science and a medical degree from the University of Louisville. Dr. Guy completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. After residency, he completed an A-O fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Inselspital in Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Guy previously served as secretary, chair-elect, and chair of the Board of Councilors of the AAOS, where he served on the Academy Board of Directors. Additionally, he served on many Academy committees, project teams and work groups. Dr. Guy is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the Alpha Omicron Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is past president and board member of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Guy enjoys traveling, sports, reading and outdoor activities. He actively participates in his community as team physician to three local high schools and two colleges, and as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in La Grange. Dr. Guy and his wife Jill have two children and three grandchildren. Dr. Savoie has been recognized as an integral member of virtually every respected organization relating to shoulder and elbow surgery, arthroscopy, and sports medicine. He has held numerous leadership positions and served as president of several organizations including the Arthroscopy Association of North America (2010), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (2016), Orthopaedic Learning Center (2016), and Louisiana Orthopaedic Association (2016). In addition to building a successful clinical and surgical practice, Dr. Savoie has devoted his career to grow and advance the field of orthopedics. He has trained hundreds of medical students, residents and fellows, including a host of surgeons who visit from across the world to observe and rotate with him year-round. He has authored more than 1,000 publications and continues to develop new academic and clinical research using his own data, alongside other international innovators. He serves as a Board examiner for ABOS and has been a member of the Editorial Board and reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals including The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, Journal of Arthroscopy, Clinical Orthopaedics Related Research and American Journal of Sports Medicine. A native of Paincourtville in southern Louisiana, Dr. Savoie is the oldest child in a family of nine. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University. He completed his internship and orthopedic residency at University of Mississippi, then pursued additional specialty training through an A-O fellowship in Basel, Switzerland, Hand and Microvascular fellowship in Wisconsin and the Mayo Clinic and Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy fellowship in Richmond, Va. He also obtained additional training in shoulder surgery with Dr. Richard Hawkins in London, Ontario, Canada. He is Board Certified by the ABOS, with a subspecialty certification in sports medicine. In 2007, after spending years with a successful private practice in Mississippi, Dr. Savoie was recruited by Dr. Raoul Rodriguez, then chairman of the Tulane Department of Orthopaedics, to rebuild the department and revive the medical community after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Savoie accepted the challenge, moved his family to New Orleans, and became professor of Clinical Orthopaedics, chief of the Division of Sports Medicine, and director of the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine. In 2015, he was named chairman, and now holds the Ray J. Haddad Professorship of Orthopaedics. A father of five, and grandfather of 10, he lives with his wife, Amy, in the uptown area of New Orleans.
