The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has named Paul Tornetta III, MD, PhD, FAAOS as the 2024-2025 president. Tornetta will assume his position following the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Tornetta is currently in his third year of a four-year term of volunteer service for the AAOS board of directors. He is also the director of orthopaedic trauma at Boston Medical Center as well as a professor and chair member at the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine of Boston University Orthopaedic Surgery Department. Tornetta has also served as president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) as well as served on the executive committee for the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA). “I am honored and humbled to serve as AAOS president,” Tornetta said in his acceptance speech. “As orthopaedic surgeons, we share a strong bond based on helping others. We have the tools to contribute to the greater good – to make a positive impact on the well-being of others that few people can.” While as an AAOS volunteer, Tornetta served as a member-at-large on the board of directors and has chaired the Education Council for four years. In 2022 Tornetta collaborated with AAOS, the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), and the Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (CORD) to launch the AAOS Resident Orthopaedic Core Knowledge (ROCK) Curriculum. “I am deeply grateful to the AAOS Board of Directors for entrusting me to take on this role and look forward to working alongside them and with the many volunteer and staff leaders in the organization to move our profession forward in the service of our patients,” added Dr. Tornetta. “We succeed only with each other, and I am optimistic about the future for our patients – and for us.” Tornetta leads the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Consortium and has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers. The consortium focuses on large-scale studies that improve best surgical practices for some of the most common musculoskeletal diseases. He has multiple recognitions including the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Clinical Research Award and multiple Bovill Awards that are received at the OTA annual meeting.
