Bacterin International Holdings Inc. has received a U.S. patent to produce a demineralized cancellous bone matrix product.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued the company U.S. Patent No. 8,574,825 entitled “Process for Demineralization of Bone Matrix with Preservation of Natural Growth Factors.” The patent safeguards the company’s process of producing a demineralized cancellous bone matrix, such as Bacterin’s OsteoSponge product line. Bacterin has a pending divisional application in the United States to pursue protection on other aspects of its bone demineralization technology and is pursuing protection on related applications in Canada, Europe, and Korea.

“We are pleased to receive this patent that protects our demineralized bone products. This patent further substantiates our core competency in demineralized bone matrix technology,” BacterinChief Scientific Officer Gregory Juda said.

The OsteoSponge technology allows for the allograft comprised of human bone to become compressible, while maintaining the spectrum of native growth factors inherent to bone. These growth factors are essential for the tissue regeneration process in the patients’ body. Because of the compressible handling of the scaffold, and the presence of growth factors, Bacterin has achieved fusion rates greater than 97 percent in peer reviewed, published studies.

Based in Belgrade, Mont., Bacterin International Holdings Inc. develops, manufactures and markets biologics products to domestic and international markets. These products are used in various applications, including enhancing fusion in spine surgery, relief of back pain, promotion of bone growth in foot and ankle surgery, promotion of cranial healing following neurosurgery and subchondral repair in knee and other joint surgeries.

Bacterin’s Medical Device division develops, employs, and licenses coatings for various medical device applications.
