DJO Global Introduces the Empowr 3D Knee

Austin, Texas-based DJO Global Inc. launched the new Empowr 3D Knee this year’s Annual Meeting of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in Dallas, Texas. The device, which receivbed 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May, is targeted at young and active patients to help them return to athletics and activities of daily living through the restoration of natural, healthy knee motion.

“The Empowr 3D Knee retains the proven articular surface design of the 3DKnee, which has been shown in over ten years of clinical and laboratory studies to provide patients with stability, durability, strength and range of motion,” said Scott Banks, Ph.D., co-designer of the 3DKnee and professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Florida. Randomized trials show this robust design provides the same clinical results whether or not the posterior cruciate ligament is retained. The new Empowr 3D Knee™ design retains all these functional benefits in a system that is designed to optimally fit patients’ anatomy while giving surgeons more intraoperative flexibility and efficiency.”

For over 25 years, Banks has been leading biomechanics research to understand joint motion, as well as supporting clinical research studies. He is also an invited member of the prestigious Knee Society.

The Empowr 3D Knee system is designed to recreates natural motion throughout the entire range of motion from early flexion to mid flexion and through deep flexion. It contains e+ polyethylene, a knee-specific formula blended with vitamin E to reduce long-term wear.
