San Diego, Calif.-based DJO Global Inc. is rolling out a host of new products at this year’s American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) meeting in San Francisco.

DJO Surgical will feature its new RSP Monoblock shoulder system, an extension of its Reverse Shoulder Prosthesis shoulder system, or RSP. The RSP Monoblock expands the indications for reverse shoulder arthroplasty to include fractures, which company execs will increase the number of patients that can be treated with RSP.

In addition, DJO Surgical is releasing a number of conversion modules that will permit surgeons to transition from a primary total shoulder to a reverse shoulder arthroplasty, and from a reverse shoulder arthroplasty to a hemiarthroplasty (a surgical procedure that replaces one half of the joint with an artificial surface and leaves the other part in its natural pre-operative state). According to the company, the new modules will improve the surgeon’s ability to treat a number of conditions with the system and will allow for greater interoperative flexibility.

DJO Surgical also has introduced the Movation total knee arthroplasty system, which is based on concepts originally developed and patented by the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, N.Y., which have has more than 20 years of clinical success, the company claims. According to the company, Movation brings “modern solutions” to this “classic” knee arthroplasty. The system provides instrumentation that will allow for “simple and reproducible” results,” officials noted. Movation also is slated to incorporate the company’s e+ vitamin E blended polyethylene, that company officials claim has superior wear characteristics as compared to other commercially available polyethylene materials. The Movation system will allow the company to address a large segment of the knee arthroplasty market that it was not previously able to address.

In addition, DJO Surgical will highlight its Revelation microMAX hip system. the microMAX stem is a short version of the companies Revelation hip system. The shortened stem allows for placement of the device with minimal bone and tissue loss, and is ideal for all surgical approaches, including the direct anterior approach, which is quickly gaining in popularity, according to DJO. The stem can be used with all of DJO Surgical’s existing acetabular cup options, including the X-alt cross-linked polyethylene liners.

Lastly, DJO Surgical has finalized a U.S. distribution partnership with Italy-based Lima Corporate. The two companies began their partnership in 2009 with a limited distribution agreement. DJO Surgical launched the first of Lima’s products in the United States, a revision hip system, in 2010. Lima is successfully distributing DJO Surgical’s 3DKnee and Foundation total knee system in selected European markets. Under the expanded arrangement, upon U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance, DJO Surgical will be the exclusive U.S. distributor for all of the Lima Trabecular Titanium acetabular products, which also will be featured during AAOS.

“We are excited to be introducing three major new products at this year’s AAOS meeting,” said Bryan Monroe, senior vice president and general manager of DJO Surgical. “These new products, combined with additional products added to our U.S. distribution partnership with Lima Corporate, will expand and strengthen our offerings in all three of our major product segments; knees, hips, and shoulders.”
