Alphatec Spine Inc. was one of the more prolific firms with regard to product launches and announcements at this year’s annual North American Spine Society (NASS) meeting in Chicago, Ill.

At this year’s event, the company debuted the Trestle Luxe anterior cervical plating system, the firm’s next-generation anterior cervical fixation system. The device, according to Alphatec, “combines a proprietary zero-step locking mechanism, low-profile flush-fit design, large graft window, and a comprehensive offering of implants and instrumentation.”

Also new this year was the Avalon occipito-cervico plating system, which is used in connection with the company’s Solanas posterior cervico-thoracic fixation system. Company officials at the show said the buttress design of the Avalon plate lets surgeons “optimize the placement and secure bone graft in the optimal midline location to help promote fusion and improve graft stability.”

The Epicage minimally invasive posterior interbody spacer was unveiled. The device can be used for either transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion or posterior lumbar interbody fusion procedures. In its resting state the cage has a crescent shape. A unique geometry and design allows it to be flexed into a straight and narrow shape, company officials noted. The cage can be delivered in a minimally invasive, low-profile manner, and then reshapes to cover a large surface area.

The Alphatec Solus anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) system was not new to the company, but the firm now says the device will be available internationally.

“Alphatec Spine is extremely proud to have designed, manufactured and introduced each of these products to the U.S. and international markets”, said Dirk Kuyper, president and CEO. “These products are on the cutting edge of spinal instrumentation and implants. Each incorporates our philosophy of being focused on the aging spine, being minimally invasive in their approach and compatible with biologics solutions. Each of these systems is in a significantly sized market segment, and as next-generation designs, each has the potential to impact our future positively.”

Alphatec Spine is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphatec Holdings Inc. in Carlsbad, Calif.
