Project to develop special surface parameters for Ti64 implants.
September 25, 2019
By: Kanfit3D
Kanfit3D, a provider of advanced, high quality Additive Manufacturing of Ti64 metal components for the aerospace, medical & dental industries, announced that it has entered into a joint research partnership with the University of Brescia (Italy). The program is being funded by the Israel Innovation Authority. The aim of the project is to develop unique implantable structures, utilizing additive layer manufacturing (ALM) technologies, for replacing or augmenting missing body tissue with customized surface treatments for improved osseointegration. The goal is to achieve a better biological response within a reduced healing time. The project involves the use of traditional alloys (Ti-alloys). A variety of designs will be tested on implant surfaces for anatomical regions that have different mechanical and surface property requirements. The impact of process parameters and surface treatments on the critical performance characteristics of the final component will be assessed and optimized. The biological characterization will involve both the investigation of reduced bacterial adhesion in correspondence with an improved osteointegration due to fabrication, and post-processing optimization. The Mechanical Technologies Group of the University of Brescia (Italy) and Kanfit3D will work together to optimize manufacturing efficiencies for the production and post-processing of implants using such additive manufacturing technologies as selective laser melting (SLM) and electric beam melting (EBM). In addition, clinicians from the Nocivelli Laboratory of the University of Brescia, who use ALM technologies, will conduct biological tests and clinical usage, while The Technion—Israel Institute of Metals will be responsible for the mechanical testing of the printed implants. CSMT (the Centre for Multisector Technologies of Brescia Italy) is responsible for the management and dissemination of the project results. “We are extremely excited to be teaming with the University of Brescia on this groundbreaking project,” said Samuel Rosenblum, CEO of Kanfit3D. “Since its establishment in 2016, our main focus is on the design and manufacturing of patient-specific implants. Our consistent high-quality implants are manufactured in collaboration with top medical professionals and institutions, and have been successfully implanted into patients in Israel and abroad. We are certain that our experience will enable us to make great strides in meeting the goals of the project.”
