Neurotech Releases New Back Pain Device

The device treats lower back pain specifically.

Neurotech has released a new device to treat lower back pain. Neurotech Recovery – Back is a non-invasive device that is designed to rehabilitate the lower back and abdominal muscles.

Lower back pain is not a specific disease, but a symptom that results from various conditions, including disc degeneration. Neurotech predicts that lower back problems likely will become even more common with the aging population as well as the nation’s growing obesity problem. According to a report by ABC News, 80 percent of Americans will suffer from lower back pain in their lifetimes. The report also estimates that lower back pain costs the United States more than $90 billion in lost productivity and workdays.

Neurotech Recovery – Back helps control and treat back pain using two clinically proven therapies: TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) and NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation). The device integrates two conductive garments that work together to relieve pain, and a hand-held device controls the amount of stimulation delivered to the lower back and abdominal muscles.

The treatment protocol that combines TENS and NMES was tested by the La Jolla, Calif.-based Center for Neurologic Study and published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The combined treatment of NMES and TENS was shown to be superior to the control groups, which were stand-alone NMES and stand-alone TENS on both pain relief and pain reduction metrics.

Neurotech Recovery – Back has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and is available only by prescription.

Neurotech is a division of Bio-Medical Research Ltd., a provider of devices for pain relief and rehabilitative health. Neurotech is based in Minnetonka, Minn.
