New CEO at IlluminOss IlluminOss Medical Inc. has a new leader. The privately held medical device company has named Dirk M. Kuyper, former Alphatec Spine president and CEO, as its chief executive. Kuyper, who also will serve as president, has more than two decades of experience managing orthopedic device firms. His past efforts focused on development, implementation of strategy, and driving revenue growth from key market segments. Kuyper most recently worked as president of global commercial operations at Alphatec Spine Inc., where he also served as CEO. His role at the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company was modified last February to “enhance future revenue growth and operating excellence.” Before joining Alphatec Spine, Kuyper spent 17 years at Aesculap Inc., a subsidiary of B. Braun Medical Inc., where he rose from a regional sales manager to president. Prior to that, he had extensive experience in sales and marketing at several medical device companies. Kuyper received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Miami and an executive education certificate from the Graduate School of Sales and Marketing at Syracuse University in New York. He also chieved the rank of captain in the United States Army. “Dirk Kuyper is the ideal person to move the company into the commercialization phase of our life cycle,” said Robert Rabiner, IlluminOss’s founder and chief technology officer. “I look forward to working closely with him to implement market acceptance and distribution of our products while I focus on further development of our technology.” “The technology Bob Rabiner and his team have developed has the potential to change the standard of care in fracture management,” said Kuyper. “I am excited about being part of the team and leveraging my global commercialization background to help build IlluminOss into a leading company in the fracture fixation marketplace.” The IlluminOss Photodynamic Bone Stabilization System creates internal bone support and alignment systems utilizing expandable balloon catheters and a photodynamic (light-curable) polymer system designed to provide stabilization, cosmesis, and flexible surgical approaches in orthopedics. The company has received the CE mark for clinical applications in the upper extremities, and is extending the platform technology to lower extremity bones and indications in cranio-maxillofacial, spine, and sports medicine fields. The global bone fracture repair market was worth roughly $5.5 billion in 2010 and is growing approximately 6 percent annually. Analysts say the market is being driven by population growth and aging populations worldwide. Headquartered in East Providence, R.I., IlluminOss is a clinical stage company focused on the development of minimally invasive, patient-customized orthopedic systems for the stabilization and treatment of bone fractures. The company currently has the CE mark for its intramedullary bone stabilization system for low load-bearing bone injuries. The company was founded in 2007.
