ROMTech Study Shows Home-Based Rehab Outperforms Standard TKA Physical Therapy

ROMTech, maker of the PortableConnect adaptive telemedicine technology and a company focused on orthopedic rehabilitation medicine, has released study results showing the home-based PortableConnect remote, clinician-controlled physical therapy device achieved superior results compared to standard physical therapy for rehab following total knee replacement.
 
The study was published in The Journal of Arthroplasty in October 2022 and compared 135 total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients that received standard therapy protocol with 135 patients using PortableConnect for their therapy. Outcomes were assessed at two, six, and 12 weeks and had a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, KOOS JR score (overall knee health after TKA), and knee range of motion (ROM).
 
Results demonstrated knee ROM was greater in the group using PortableConnect at all time points. Minimal clinically important differences exceeded the threshold for both VAS and KOOS JR, and there were significantly fewer arthrofibrosis cases needing manipulation under anesthesia in the PortableConnect group (1.48% vs 4.44%).
