VB Spine announced that it has completed the acquisition of exclusive rights to the xvision Spine System from Augmedics.

The deal, first announced two months ago, adds augmented reality (AR) navigation to the company’s enhanced visualization portfolio. Augmedics reportedly is the first company to offer a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared AR navigation platform in spine surgery, giving VB Spine a potential advantage in AR-enabled spine solutions.

“We are thrilled at how quickly this transaction completed. It is a testament to how critical the xvision Spine System platform is to the future of spine care and demonstrates our desire to realize the potential of augmented reality. We are moving to operationalize the business and are grateful for this opportunity,” said Marc Viscogliosi, co-CEO of VB Spine, speaking on behalf of his brothers, Anthony and John Viscogliosi.

The xvision Spine System combines the benefits of navigation with the ease and utility of open surgery—visualization while looking directly at the patient, accuracy and precision, workflow efficiency, and radiation reduction. With nearly 13,000 patients treated with xvision, the transaction brings together two complementary portfolios focused on redefining spine care. It’s intended as an aid for precisely locating anatomical structures in either open, minimally invasive, or percutaneous spine procedures.

Earlier this year, VB Spine revealed acquisitions of the SpineHawk platform from Robotron Surgcal Technologies, as well as Stryker’s spine implant manufacturing facility in Cestas, France.
