Stryker began a deal to acquire Vertos Medical, a company that offers a minimally invasive solution to treat chronic lower back pain due to lumbar spinal stenosis.

Vertos’ FDA-cleared mild procedure offers a pain relief solution and can improve mobility without needing major surgery, the company said. The procedure addresses a root cause of lumbar spinal stenosis by removing excess ligament tissue to restore space in the canal. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and can be performed through a single incision smaller than the size of a baby aspirin (5.1 mm).

mild is a potential early treatment option when conservative therapies like physical therapy, pain medication, and chiropractic treatments do not provide adequate relief. It’s covered by Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans nationwide, as well.

“We are committed to helping customers restore patients’ quality of life with interventional solutions to address chronic pain,” said Andy Pierce, Group President, MedSurg and Neurotechnology, Stryker. “This acquisition strengthens our minimally invasive pain management portfolio with differentiated treatments and expands our reach across ambulatory surgery centers.”

“Allowing patients to get back to what matters most to them is what matters most to us,” added Eric Wichems, Vertos Medical’s CEO. “Stryker’s mission and focus on interventional solutions provides an opportunity to further improve patients’ quality of life.”
