Orthofix revealed it will present new data supporting use of its Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) stimulation to boost fusion rates as an adjunct to lumbar spine fusion surgery.

The company said patients treated with its SpinalStim bone growth therapy device showed a high rate of successful fusion with improvements in pain, function, and quality of life, despite risk factors for pseudoarthrosis. The abstract will be presented at this week’s North American Spine Society (NASS) annual meeting by Dr. Marc Weinstein, an orthopedic spine surgeon at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, Fla.

Orthofix can be found at booth #3017 at NASS.

During NASS, Orthofix is also showcasing new products including its OsteoStrand Plus C 100% bone-derived graft. OsteoStrand Plus C is made of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) fibers and the company’s Accell bone matrix, a dispersed form of DBM that immediately releases growth factors upon implantation. It also increases the product’s growth factor concentration and cancellous chips.

OsteoStrand Plus C is used as a bone graft in spinal fusion. Orthofix said it has improved packability relative to options that don’t contain the chips, which provides a denser fill and helps minimize graft displacement.

Orthofix will also launch the M6-C single-use, disposable instrument sets. These are touted as the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared instruments of this type designed specifically for cervical disc arthroplasty.
