EDGE Orthopeaedics, a brand-new player in the orthopedics market is about to release its inaugural product, the BITE compression screws. The Boonton, N.J. company just received its first 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and plans a full launch of the screws later this year.
“We’re an up and coming orthopedic company initially focusing in extremitieswith primary focus on foot and ankle,” explained Director of Marketing Ashlee Kalbermatten to Orthopedic Design & Technology. “We started EDGE from the ground up, developing a robust quality management system to put patient safety first. The reason the company chose compression screws for its first foray into the orthopedic space, according to President and Chief Scientific Officer Steve Brigido, DPM, is that these represent a basic foundation for any orthopedic device, especially extremities-focused, company.
“Compression screws are used in approximately 90 percent of foot and ankle procedures and are the backbone of every orthopedic extremity company,” Brigido said. “With a comprehensive range of sizes in both headed and headless options—not to mention an extremely low profile head and better 'Bite'—EDGE is building a strong foundation for future growth.”
“[Compression screws] are really the go to product that most surgeons utilize frequently,” Kalbermatten said. “Having compression screws in our portfolio will provide us with the ability to access hospitals and surgery centers across the country."
All of the most prominent orthopedic device companies provide their own version of compression screws. Depuy Synthes, now a Johnson and Johnson company, provides headless screws in both a stainless steel or titanium steel alloy option. Stryker’s foot and ankle screw comes in titanium. Smith & Nephew’s, like Depuy Sythes,’ are headless.
“The BITE Compression Screws are made of titanium,” said Kalbermatten. “They are available in both headed and headless options with an extensive size range from 2.0mm to 8.0mm. Our Headed Compression Screws were designed with a modified cruciform head thus reducing the profile of the head to potentially decrease soft tissue irritation.
The future of Edge remains focuses on extremities. Kalbermatten told ODT that EDGE is developing additional products and exploring business development opportunities to create a full product portfolio.
The company, which was founded in 2012, does not have a full website launched yet. However, interested parties can sign up for more information at their beta website.
