Durafiber is a highly absorbent, non-woven gelling fiber dressing that treats medium to heavily exuding chronic and acute wounds. The dressing contains both a gelling fiber filler that absorbs exudates, and anti-microbial silver particles to control infection, hence the “Ag.”The dressing stays strong when wet and resists shrinkage.
Smith &Nephew launched the product in the United States in September. Executives said the product will be sold in "other markets in the near future," but they did not specify locations or the timing of future Durafiber debuts.
According to product literature, the Durafiber AG has cellulose fibers that give the dry and gelled matrix a built-in structural integrity and reinforcing fibers that retain the dressing's shape when wet. The Durafiber also features gelling fibers that swell and gel on contact with exudate absorbing and locking in fluid. In addition, the fibers transform into a cohesive gel sheet that contour closely to the wound bed.
“We believe it is important that clinicians have a choice when treating these type of wounds," Frans Cromme, senior vice president, Advanced Wound Care, said. "I’m delighted that patients will now be able to benefit from this new dressing with its high absorbency.”
