The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has named Joseph A. Bosco III, MD, FAAOS, as its new president. Dr. Bosco’s new role is the third in a four-year term of volunteer service, after serving as a vice president of the Academy for the previous two years.
In his acceptance speech, Bosco said, “I am privileged to be named president of an organization that is dedicated to advancing the quality of orthopedic care and of a profession that is working to improve the musculoskeletal health of our patients. I remain just as humbled by, and dedicated to, the Academy’s mission as I was when I joined 30 years ago.”
Bosco is professor and vice chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health. He specializes in sports medicine and knee surgery. His research interests include healthcare policy and quality. He has lectured and published extensively on these topics.
Bosco was raised in upstate New York and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Union College in Schenectady, New York and attended the Larner College of Medicine at University of Vermont in Burlington. He completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in orthopedics at The University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., and completed his fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Bosco has been a long-time active member of the AAOS and was elected to the Academy’s Board of Directors as a member-at-large in 2013. He began his Academy service as a member of the Sports Medicine Evaluation Committee and was a member of the 2005 Leadership Fellows Program.
