Orthonika was awarded its fifth grant from Innovate UK. This was a £1.3 million grant (approximately $1.7 million) for the completion of pre-clinical development and testing of its synthetic total meniscus replacement in preparation for the clinic. Orthonika’s total grant funding is now £2 million.
In a press release Dominique Kleyn, co-founder and chief operating officer, said: “This highly competitive award brings additional resource for Orthonika to further expand the team, engage with development partners and manufacturers, and accelerate plans to take our total meniscus replacement product into first in human studies.”
Orthonkia’s first-of-its-kind synthetic option meniscus replacement is an orthopedic implant for the knee and joint, replicating the structure and function of the native meniscus. Orthonkia’s total meniscus replacement implant allows for optimal load transfer and distribution in the knee during mobility through its unique inherent attachment mechanism incorporated into the underlying structure.
Orthonika’s total meniscus replacement is intended to fill the gap between minimally invasive meniscus repair and total knee replacement. The implant aims to restore biomechanical function of the meniscus to help improve mobility, reduce pain, and ultimately delay the onset of osteoarthritis.
“There is currently no widely available treatment solution that allows patients to return to a pain free active lifestyle following meniscectomy,” commented Maria Kristina Bartolo, chief technology officer. “We are delighted that Innovate UK has recognized the potential for our novel total meniscus replacement to fulfil a significant unmet clinical need and further promote joint preservation.”
