Augmedics, an augmented reality (AR) surgical navigation company, has appointed Tal Davidson, MD as its new VP of R&D.
Davidson was most recently artificial intelligence (AI) research director and site lead for Medtronic’s Visionsense, an R&D site developing intraoperative visualization and AI opportunities for minimally invasive surgery. Visionsense is central to Medtronic’s “OR of the Future” strategic initiative.
Augmedics recently bolstered its AR and AI business by acquiring Surgalign and Holo Surgical’s intellectual property and digital health assets, after a competitive auction overseen by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
The company closed an $82.5 million Series D financing round earlier this year. It also celebrated its 25,000th screw implanted using the xvision Spine system in September.
“The future of spine navigation exists at the intersection of best-in-class advanced visualization and decision support,” Augmedics president and CEO Kevin Hykes told the press. “Tal’s multidisciplinary leadership in intraoperative imaging & artificial intelligence is a tremendous asset as we build out the next generation of the xvision platform and continue our mission to deliver improved surgical outcomes for surgeons and their patients. We are proud to welcome Tal to the Augmedics team.”
Hykes, an over 30-year medtech veteran, began leading the company in January 2022.
