The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has appointed Wilford K. Gibson, MD, FAAOS, as the second vice president of AAOS’ board of directors. Gibson will assume his position following the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
This is Gibson’s first role in a four-year long term of volunteer service during which he will serve as president in 2026.
For over a decade, Gibson has been a part of AAOS leadership, having joined the Board of Councilors (BOC) in 2011 and serving as BOC chair from 2014-2015. He also chaired the AAOS Advisory Council from 2017-2021.
For nine years, Gibson served on the Political Action Committee of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Gibson also received the AAOS Congressional Ambassador of the Year Award in 2022.
Gibson began his career as a surgical intern at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) and was assigned to the USS Nassau for deployments in the Middle East, Mediterranean, Africa, and the Caribbean. For his service, Gibson was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, as well as Navy “E” and sea service ribbons.
He completed his surgical residency at NMPC and was a Navy fellow in orthopaedic trauma at Tampa General Hospital in Florida. After that, he led the orthopaedic trauma service at NMCP.
After his military service, Gibson served as chief of the Division of Orthopaedics at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. He is a partner of the Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.
He served as the former president of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society, receiving the society’s President’s Award in 2014 and the Career Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
Gibson’s focus is on adult reconstruction of the hip and knee, specializing in robotic and minimally invasive approaches as well as sports medicine. He is currently an associate professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School and a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Uniformed Services University of the Health and Sciences in Maryland.
