Pittsburgh orthopedic surgeon Thomas S. Muzzonigro, M.D., FAAOS, has been named chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) Board of Councilors (BOC).
The BOC consists of more than 100 members elected by state and regional orthopaedic societies including Puerto Rico, the U.S. military, Canada, and four regional societies. The BOC serves as an advisory body to the AAOS Board of Directors, Councils, Cabinet, and Committees. The BOC also manages the Academy’s relations with state and regional orthopaedic societies and conducts a wide range of programs to strengthen and support the societies.
Dr. Muzzonigro specializes in hip and knee reconstruction and practices at Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal Centers in Pittsburgh. He serves as the director of medical education and is the medical director of orthopedics and rehabilitation at Butler Health System in Butler, Pa.
Dr. Muzzonigro received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y. He completed his internship in general surgery and residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he also served as a clinical instructor in orthopedics. Dr. Muzzonigro has written numerous articles on orthopedic topics, including sports medicine, the opioid crisis and gene therapy for arthritis. He also has lectured on health education and serves as a lead orthopedic surgeon for Operation Walk Pittsburgh, a volunteer organization dedicated to providing the gift of mobility to patients in need across Central America.
Prior to his appointment as chair of the BOC, Dr. Muzzonigro served on the AAOS’ Communications Cabinet and is the past president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society.
