FDA approvals and business partnerships attracted the most readers to ODT's website this past week, as product innovation and deals (financial and otherwise) continued at a steady pace. The FDA granted 510(k) clearance to Surgalign Holding Inc.'s HOLO Portal surgical guidance system for use in lumbar spine procedures. The system combines machine learning-based image guidance technology with augmented reality, automated spine segmentation (anatomy recognition), and automated surgical planning software using proprietary AI software.
The agency also granted 510(k) clearance to VUZE Medical's VUZE System, a software-only solution designed for use in spinal stablizatiion surgeries performed in outpatient or ambulatory settings. The VUZE System overlays a graphical representation of tools seen in intra-operative 2D images onto axial and sagittal views generated from the patient's standard pre-operative 3D scan.
Also garnering numerous page views this week was Smith+Nephew's 135 million bid for Engage Surgical, maker of a cementless partial knee system, and Orthofix's partnership with nView Medical to jointly develop and co-market nView's surgical imaging and guidance systems with Orthofix's cervical spine and pediatric limb deformity correction procedural solutions.
